Marvel Divas Vol. 1

This volume collects the first issue of the four-issue limited series Marvel Divas, titled "Bad News on a Good Day," published on July 1, 2009. Writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa brings together four female superheroes who previously had no connection, forming a circle of friends: Hellcat (Patsy Walker), Black Cat (Felicia Hardy), Photon (Monica Rambeau), and Firestar (Angelica Jones). The story opens with Patsy celebrating the publication of her new book at a party attended by New York's upper-crust A-list heroines eager to steal the spotlight. Patsy slips away from the crowd to drink and chat with Felicia and Monica, and the three exchange updates on their love lives. Angelica then joins the gathering and delivers shocking news: she has cancer. Over the course of that single night, the four women truly come together through their individual troubles. The main story runs twenty-three pages; the creators deliberately downplay superpowers and combat, using extensive dialogue to portray these heroines' confusion and friendship as ordinary people, laying groundwork for the emotional entanglements, illness, old flames, and return to crime that unfold across the remaining three issues.
