Vagabond is adapted from Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi and follows the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi as he journeys through the late Warring States and early Edo periods in pursuit of the pinnacle of swordsmanship—to be unmatched under heaven. Takehiko Inoue reimagines this legend with brushwork that evokes ink wash painting and creates an original storyline for Sasaki Kojiro. Volume 37 picks up after the Farming Arc. In a village ravaged by famine, Musashi, who seeks only the Way, sets aside his sword and takes up the hoe; unsuited to farming as he is, he clears the land day after day and teaches the village women self-defense in his own way. As the famine worsens, this proud swordsman does something he could never have imagined: he asks for help. In exchange for grain and seed, he agrees to serve as a sword instructor in Kokura after the harvest. And so he is torn—troubled by the prospect of becoming a sword instructor bound to one place, yet unable to let go of the village he helped save. The old farmer Shusaku is reluctant at first but gradually joins Musashi in the fields, and the villagers' idleness is changed by his example. Two men who cannot understand each other meet through fragile rice stalks, each bearing unexpected fruit within. This is also the latest volume published in the series to date.
