Summary
Slam Dunk is the representative work of Japanese manga artist Takehiko Inoue. Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990, it is a high school basketball story and is regarded as one of the peaks of Japanese sports manga. The story begins with Hanamichi Sakuragi, a first-year student at Shohoku High School: rejected by fifty girls in a row during middle school, he joins the basketball club in high school because he has a crush on his classmate Haruko Akagi. Haruko, however, is fond of Kaede Rukawa, a star player since middle school. With no basketball background, Sakuragi relies on his outstanding physical gifts and refusal to lose, grows rapidly from basic drills, and gradually becomes an indispensable starter for Shohoku; the aloof Rukawa, guided by Coach Anzai, decides to first become the best player in the country. That year, Ryota Miyagi, newly recovered from illness, and Hisashi Mitsui, a former middle school MVP who had gone astray, return to the team one after another, joining captain Takenori Akagi to form Shohoku's starting five—and "dominate the nation" is no longer just a dream. The team fights through the prefectural tournament, earns a berth in the national tournament, and faces defending champion Sannoh Industry in a classic showdown. Beyond the passionate games, the book weaves in much humorous daily life and adolescent growth, telling a youth where talent, effort, teamwork, and regret intertwine. The simplified Chinese edition was introduced by Changchun Publishing House in 31 volumes, with covers and volume titles following the original tankobon system.
Editor's review
