Summary

Vagabond is a seinen manga by Takehiko Inoue adapted from Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Morning since 1998. With ink-wash-style linework and sword-duel scenes, it depicts Miyamoto Musashi's journey from a combative youth toward the realization that "the way of the sword is the way of the human being." This is Volume 29 of the series, corresponding to roughly the hundredth chapter onward of the original: Musashi is imprisoned for "slaying seventy men," facing a future in which his severely injured right leg may never let him grip a sword again; his prison conversations with Takuan force him for the first time to confront the killing and obsession that have marked his path. Meanwhile, a retainer of Iwama Kakubei, a vassal of the Hosokawa clan in Kokura, engages Sasaki Kojiro—armed only with a slender branch—in a duel whose outcome hangs undecided. Action scenes are relatively sparse in this volume; more space goes to the thought of "stopping in one's tracks": is the sword an instrument for killing, or a discipline that ends with sheathing the blade? For long-time readers, this is an important transitional chapter in which Musashi moves from "strength" toward "awakening."

Editor's review

Reading tips
