Iron Man (2012) #5

Iron Man #5 is the final chapter of the five-part "Believe" arc that opened the fifth volume of Iron Man after the Marvel NOW! relaunch, titled "Believe 5 of 5: Men of the World." In the first four issues, a warning sent by Maya Hansen before her death led Tony Stark to discover that Extremis enhancement kits had leaked onto the black market and fallen into the hands of several buyers; Tony set out to recover them one by one. In this issue he targets the last traceable signal—located in Earth orbit. The recipients of the Extremis enhancements turn out to include Eli Warren, a mentor and friend from Tony's youth. Eli has gathered a group of scientists and thieves aboard a space station; they use stolen Extremis to modify their bodies so they can survive in low gravity and intense radiation, preparing humanity to venture out among the stars. Tony shares the dream but cannot accept such a dangerous virus remaining in anyone's hands—if it fell to someone like Doctor Doom or the Red Skull, the consequences would be unthinkable. In the end, he defeats those who stand in his way and destroys the Extremis enhancement devices, while leaving the enhancements these people already have intact; he then dons a new deep-space armor, names the new artificial intelligence "P.E.P.P.E.R.," and sets off alone into space.
