Uber Volume 4

Summary
Uber is an alternate-history war comic written by British writer Kieron Gillen and published by Avatar Press. Set on the European battlefield in April 1945, as Nazi Germany stands on the brink of the fall of Berlin, the story unveils the product of secret research: the Übermenschen, or Über. These enhanced humans possess extraordinary strength and endurance and can unleash a destructive energy called the "Distortion Halo," capable of piercing almost any material. With a handful of "battleship-class" enhanced soldiers, the German army turns the tide of war, forcing the Soviets and the Allies to pursue their own enhancement programs; the war is thus endlessly prolonged in a super-soldier arms race, and atrocities and moral dilemmas escalate layer by layer. This is Volume 4 of the series, collecting issues #18–22 of the main series plus the 2014 special. By now the Nazis hold a commanding lead in enhancement technology, hope is fading among the Allied nations, and they are forced into riskier, gambler's moves—with "despair" as the only currency in circulation. The volume's focus is a retrospective on the origins of the German "battleship-class" enhanced soldiers: the backgrounds and first missions of Sieglinde and two others are "declassified" for the first time, letting readers see what these monsters—regarded as living atomic bombs—were like before they became cold-blooded killers, and what made them so. The series is notorious for its extreme violence, deliberately treating superpowers through war realism rather than heroic fantasy and weaving in real historical figures and events.
Editor's review

Reading tips
