Peerless Sovereign

Peerless Sovereign is a long-form Eastern fantasy novel by the web author Kongshen. It was originally serialized under the title Emperor Descending on the Nine Heavens on Zhulang Literature Network in 2014 and completed there, then later retitled Peerless Sovereign. The story begins with Ye Xing, a youth from a frontier town in the Great Wilderness: he is unremarkable in talent and shows no particular martial brilliance, yet again and again, amid being belittled and suppressed, he refuses to let go, and through martial techniques and the art of battle scars he steps onto the path of cultivation. As his cultivation realm opens layer by layer, the youth moves from a minor frontier clan to sects, royal cities, and still vaster realms, crossing blades with outstanding talents of every race and rising steadily through duels, secret realms, and life-and-death battles; and the world itself is far more complex than it appears, with the Demon Realm, the Asura Realm, the Spirit Essence Realm, and other overlapping domains nested layer upon layer, as ancient conflicts and hidden powers slowly unfold behind him. The work is keyed to a heroic spirit—"pluck a flower, fling a leaf, and one may cleave the sun, moon, and rivers and mountains; stir a thought, and above one plucks the stars of the nine heavens, below one subdues the six paths of the yellow springs"—and follows the classic fantasy route of a waste rising to power, leveling up steadily, and battling powerful foes across realms and tiers. The pacing is tight and the payoffs are dense, balancing the thrill of turning the tables under an opponent's suppression with the growth of the protagonist's character. The book is enormous in length, well suited to long serial-style casual reading, and is often regarded by readers as one of the representative works of Kongshen's early style.
