Vagabond is a seinen manga by Takehiko Inoue, serialized since 1998 and based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi. It follows Miyamoto Musashi as he moves from a swordsman obsessed with proving himself "unrivaled under heaven" by cutting down opponents toward an inner journey. Volume 35 picks up after Volume 34: Musashi leaves behind his quest to win by the sword and settles in a barren village, where he lives with the fatherless boy Iori, "child of the earth." He trades his blade for a hoe, trying to dig irrigation channels and reclaim wasted fields—pitting human effort against the barrenness of nature. Yet disasters keep coming: torrential rain, floods, and pests repeatedly defeat the reclamation work. Through repeated dealings with the land, the water, and his own impatience, Musashi begins to grasp a state of being "like water, like the earth": not clinging to victory at the edge of a blade, but holding fast to what he originally is. This is the 35th volume of the series, collecting chapters roughly from Chapter 304 onward. It is a key stretch of the "farming arc," different from the earlier sword-facing chapters: quiet and restrained in pace, focused on deepening the characters' inner lives, and bringing Musashi closer to the stage before his fateful duel with Kojiro.
