Vagabond, Vol. 28

Summary
Vagabond, Vol. 28 is the 28th volume in Takehiko Inoue's long-running seinen manga series Vagabond, based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi. This volume picks up after the seventy-man slaughter at the Yagyū estate's pine grove: Musashi single-handedly faces seventy disciples of the Yoshioka school who come for revenge. He survives by a hair, but is left battered and unconscious by the roadside, where he is rescued by his childhood friend Matahachi Hon'iden and subsequently treated with the help of Zen master Takuan at Kōfuku-ji and Otsu and others. Unable to move on his own, Musashi can only lie on his sickbed and repeatedly weigh the meaning of the phrase "unrivaled under heaven": does cutting down seventy men count as victory, and is what he seeks the awe of others or the art of the sword itself? Meanwhile, Matahachi continues to travel the land under the assumed name of Sasaki Kojirō, is exposed by Baiken Shishido, and is pursued by his mother Osugi and his uncle Gon; Otsu, too, arrives at Kōfuku-ji... The pace of this volume shifts from flashing blades to silent convalescence and introspection, marking an important turning point in Vagabond from "seeking strength" to "seeking the Way."
Editor's review
Who it's for
A good fit for
Not a good fit for
Reading tips
FAQ
