Summary

Vagabond is a seinen manga by Takehiko Inoue, serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Morning since 1998. Adapted from Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, it is set in the late Warring States to early Edo period and follows the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi as he leaves Miyamoto Village, endures deadly duels and inner turmoil, and gradually questions what "peerless under heaven" truly means. With intensely expressive brush lines and abundant negative space, the work portrays the cruelty of the way of the sword and the struggles of human nature. Volume 14 marks a particular turning point in the series: the narrative temporarily leaves Musashi's journey and shifts to a child by the sea. A boy washed ashore by the waves, named Sasaki Kojiro, and the old man who raises him, and the blade between them, form another path toward "the sword." Almost like a silent play, this volume shows how the child comes to know the world, the blade, and himself, laying groundwork for the famous duel at Ganryu Island. The volume runs about 198 pages and collects serialized chapters 128 to 136.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
