Nightcrawler Vol. 2

Summary
This volume collects issue #2 of the 2004 Marvel series Nightcrawler Vol. 3, the second part of the four-issue story arc "The Devil Inside" (DIABOLIQUE) written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, subtitled "The Knotted Rope." The story follows directly from issue #1: Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner) is assigned to investigate the bizarre deaths of thirteen children, and his first day of investigation goes badly—the only surviving witness, a boy named Seth Walker, is terrified by his blue skin and pointed tail and refuses to speak. In this issue, Barney Franks, who confronted Dr. Childs in a Chicago apartment, dies when his body spontaneously combusts, and ordinary water cannot put out the flames. Because the fire carries a magical aura, Kurt goes to Limbo to seek help from his former lover and foster sister, Amanda Sefton. Amanda tells him that the knotted rope the boy clutches in his hand is likely the very medium sealing his speech. Kurt unties the knots, and Seth finally speaks—but Dr. Childs then arrives with a woman claiming to be the boy's aunt, Meredith Walker, and drives Nightcrawler away. As he leaves, Kurt sees a demon in the "aunt's" place. Nurse Christine Palmer then takes him to the morgue, where the bodies of the dead children have mysteriously turned to ash.
Editor's review
