Summary

Feihualing is an entertaining poetry game. Through it, players deepen their study and inheritance of classical Chinese poetry, refine their literary cultivation, improve their Chinese writing, and enrich their cultural life. To sustain students' enthusiasm for poetry, the Nanjing Shangneng Education Research Institute regularly uses feihualing and has compiled a companion poetry collection, Feihualing (Earth, Heaven, Dao, Nature). The Feihualing Poetry Library is a companion anthology to Feihualing: every line quoted in the latter can be traced to its source here. The Library is arranged in five genres—five-character quatrains, five-character regulated verse, seven-character quatrains, seven-character regulated verse, and ancient-style verse—and gathers more than two thousand selected poems (and prose pieces). The number preceding each piece is its lookup number in the corresponding feihualing keyword section. The Library also annotates rare characters and commonly misread characters, making study easier for readers.

Editor's review

This is a companion poetry anthology to Feihualing (Earth, Heaven, Dao, Nature), compiled by Wang Lihong and published by Jinan University Press in 2025. Arranged in five genres—five-character quatrains, five-character regulated verse, seven-character quatrains, seven-character regulated verse, and ancient-style verse—it gathers more than two thousand selected poems and prose pieces. Each piece carries a number corresponding to its lookup number in the feihualing keyword section, so readers can trace a keyword line back to the full original text. The Library also annotates rare and commonly misread characters, lowering the barrier to recitation. Its value lies in connecting the poetry game with reading the originals: when a line is remembered but the poem is not, the number leads quickly to the complete work and its context. It suits primary and secondary Chinese teachers organizing poetry activities, parents building their children's classical poetry foundation, and poetry lovers who read daily. A suggested approach: browse by genre first to grasp the layout, then use it alongside the feihualing game, looking up as you play.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Primary and secondary Chinese teachers and poetry club organizers
  • Parents building their children's classical poetry foundation
  • Lovers of poetry games such as feihualing
  • Readers who recite poetry and need to search by genre

Not a good fit for

  • Researchers seeking in-depth academic textual criticism or collation
  • Readers who want only long appreciation essays
  • People with little interest in classical poetry who want light entertainment

Reading tips

  1. Flip through a few pages of each genre—five-character quatrains, seven-character regulated verse, and so on—to learn the layout and numbering rules.
  2. Use it with the feihualing game: note the number of a keyword line, then return to the Library and read the original through.
  3. While reciting, pay attention to the annotations on rare and commonly misread characters, correcting pronunciation as you go.
  4. Choose one genre each week for focused recitation, then switch after building a foundation, rather than trying to cover too much at once.

FAQ

Must this book be used together with Feihualing?
It is a companion anthology to Feihualing: every line quoted there can be traced to its source here, and the numbers correspond to lookup numbers in the keyword section. It can also be read on its own as a genre-arranged poetry anthology, but only in combination does its lookup design come into full play.
How many works does it contain, and how are they classified?
According to the introduction, the Library gathers more than two thousand selected poems and prose pieces, divided into five genres: five-character quatrains, five-character regulated verse, seven-character quatrains, seven-character regulated verse, and ancient-style verse. Each piece has a number corresponding to its lookup number in the feihualing keyword section, making it easy to find.
Are rare characters given pronunciation or explanation?
Yes. The book annotates rare and commonly misread characters to make study and recitation easier. When unsure of a pronunciation, check the annotation for that piece before reciting.
Is it suitable for primary school students to use directly?
The book contains a large number of works across all genres, which may be difficult for primary students to use independently. It is better used with a teacher or parent, starting with short genres such as five-character quatrains, using the annotations to check pronunciation and meaning, and expanding gradually.
