The story unfolds during the Civil War II crossover, as Steve Rogers's Unity Squad fractures from within over the Terrigen Mist crisis. Rogue, Cable, and others, seeking a way to counter the mutants' M-Pox, act without Captain America's authorization, seize Terrigen Mist-related intelligence from the military, and secretly pass the material to Beast. Deadpool knows but conceals it from Steve. Steve tracks them down, conflict erupts, and the squad is ultimately ordered to disband, with several members quitting or being expelled. Meanwhile, the corpse of Doctor Voodoo's deceased brother, Daniel Drumm, returns in the flesh, drawing out a shadowy dealing tied to the Hand and the whereabouts of Bruce Banner's body, laying groundwork for later events. This volume marks the series' crucial turning point from the Unity Squad toward a new phase of unity.

Summary

This volume is the pivotal linking chapter in the 2015 Uncanny Avengers series: the larger backdrop of Civil War II and the team's internal crisis of trust occur at once. Writer Gerry Duggan does two very smart things. First, he refuses to reduce whether to keep secrets from the Captain to a simple good-versus-evil divide: mutants are watching their people die from the Terrigen Mist, and Rogue's and Cable's choices are not selfish; Steve's anger is equally justified, since he has said repeatedly that if they had told him, he would have found a way. Second, he places Deadpool in a dilemma: he joins the secret plan yet keeps invoking his daughter's plight as a mutant, giving the comic-relief shell a layer of real depth. Visually, Ryan Stegman's work with colorist Richard Isanove is equally strong, the action beats drawn with crisp, forceful lines, and the silence of the aftermath once the team disbands comes through on the page. For readers following the Unity Squad thread, this volume is unskippable.
