Series
The appeal of A+X lies in its "short, fast, hard-hitting" format: each issue is like a miniature team-up movie compressed into some twenty-odd pages, with two heroes whose personalities and factions do not quite match forced into the same trouble, letting readers see the sparks struck by colliding worldviews in a very short time. Issue #16 is especially worth a look. The Captain America and Cyclops thread has been running since issue #13 and is a rare continuous storyline in the anthology: one insists that "all are equal before the law," the other has long been regarded by the whole world as a wanted criminal, and the two fight side by side while guarding against each other. This issue flips the suspense of "are the Skrulls really the bad guys," making Captain America confront his own prejudice against mutants for the first time; a few wordless panels say more than a thousand words. The other short story, Spider-Man and Psylocke, wins on atmosphere, with Parlov's rough, cinematic art. For readers who want to complete the aftermath of "Avengers vs. X-Men" or who enjoy two-hero team-up narratives, this issue is an unskippable link in the series.

Summary

A+X is a two-hero team-up anthology series launched by Marvel in 2012 after the "Avengers vs. X-Men" event; each issue features two short stories pairing one Avenger with one X-Man, and the series ended with issue #18.

This issue is #16, released on January 8, 2014, and contains two stories: the first is a short piece featuring Spider-Man and Psylocke, from writer Ben Ryan and artist Goran Parlov, in which an accidental nighttime encounter brings out a heavy past; the second is part four of the "Captain America + Cyclops" serial story written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by David Yardin: while pursuing a group of Skrulls disguised as ranch operators, the "K Group," Captain America is bent on arresting Cyclops and bringing him to justice, while the real threat is the swarm of Skrull warriors; with the help of Emma Frost and the Stepford Cuckoos, the group gradually discovers that these Skrulls are not enemies but wanderers who fled to Earth with a secret, and the ending introduces the approaching Doctor Doom.

This volume is issue #16 of the series (corresponding to the scope of issue 16 among the "18 episodes in total" translated by the fan translation group), and is best read in series order.

Editor's review

Reading tips
