Summary

Dao Guo (The Fruit of the Dao) is a long-form xianxia web novel by Zhanpao Ranxue, serialized on Qidian from September 12, 2013 to its completion in September 2015, totaling over 4.5 million characters.

The novel opens bluntly with a series of questions on the Dao: "What is the Dao? The Dao of nature is divinity, the Dao of destiny is immortality; becoming immortal and becoming divine are both the Dao. What is the Great Dao? Nature and destiny are the foremost Great Dao." From this it establishes a world in which the immortal way, the divine way, and the human way stand as three pillars yet interpenetrate. The divine way requires a mandate, the wishes of the myriad people, or the principles of heaven and earth to establish one's station, rising from the lowest minor gods through the ranks of star lords and heavenly lords. The immortal way takes the Dao of destiny as its root, ascending layer by layer through body forging, spirit refining, core formation, and the void way. The human way takes ritual, law, order, and the learning of the Hundred Schools as its backbone: scholars govern the world and gods receive sacrifice, all within the incense smoke of the mortal realm.

The protagonist, Qiu Yan, is a naturally born deity trapped in a broken temple in the wilderness, long sealed within a divine statue and living in cold solitude. By chance he saves a scholar pursued by demons, escapes by borrowing the scholar's body and memories, and refines three hairs he carries into external incarnations, each bearing one of the three paths of cultivation—nature, destiny, and divinity. One reads and governs in the mortal world, accumulating renown; one spreads incense offerings and manages divine office; one faces killing and bloodshed directly, tempering the heart. Outwardly cautious but inwardly resolute, he never shows mercy to enemies, yet repays every cause and effect he incurs. The book follows his ascent from a nameless minor god to a chess player behind the scenes, unfurling vistas of court intrigue, demonic mischief, contests over divine office, and the rivalry of the Hundred Schools, and closes with his reckoning of his own Dao and its fruit.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips
