Temptation

Summary
Temptation is an urban novel by the web author E Kao, circulated online as a serial and collected on sites devoted to curated web fiction through a proofread edition. The novel turns its gaze on an utterly ordinary male protagonist in the city, telling how this everyman, encountering the threefold temptations of power, money, and beauty in daily life, wavers and struggles within, and is gradually swept along toward his downfall. The author states his theme at the outset: a man of true stature may hold power lightly and treat wealth as dirt, yet often falls before beauty—as the saying goes, "even heroes fail at the beauty's gate." Taking desire as its thread, the novel unfolds a panorama of social ties, interest exchanges, and emotional entanglements in urban life, using the protagonist's choices and their cost to discuss how ordinary people hold fast or lose their footing before temptation. The prose stays close to life, focusing on the characters' psychological shifts and circumstances, placing it in the realistic strain of urban web fiction.
Editor's review
