Ambiguity

Ambiguity is one of the representative works of Qidian author E Kao, a long urban romance web novel of around 400 chapters and 1.37 million Chinese characters, now completed. The story is narrated in the first person by the protagonist "I" (Yu Shan), an ordinary bank clerk who has spent twenty-six years in a quiet routine of work, reading, and music. One day in golden autumn October, he begins to cross paths with three remarkable women: one mature, sensual, gentle, and kind; one coolly elegant, stern, with clear loves and hatreds; and one youthful, radiant, and lively. As these relationships deepen, he is astonished to discover that the three are in fact sisters, and his once-simple daily life is propelled into a series of misunderstandings, tests, and emotional conflicts. The novel explores the dilemmas faced by urban young people in workplace socializing, personal relationships, and romantic choices, depicting "ambiguous" relationships—neither too close nor too far—in a lighthearted tone: "A measured reserve, neither near nor far, tantalizingly distant. Beautiful, yet fragile." As one of the earlier web novels built around "urban ambiguity" as its core selling point, it exerted a certain influence on later works of the same genre and serves as a useful introduction to the landscape of early urban web romance fiction.
