Summary

Lucky Man (Japanese original title Tottemo! Lucky Man) is a shonen manga by Japanese manga artist Hiroshi Gamou (ガモウひろし, later writing under the pen name Tsugumi Ohba), serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1993 to 1997, with 16 volumes and 188 chapters in total; in 1994 it was adapted by Studio Pierrot into a 50-episode television anime. The protagonist, Yoichi Oute (Cantonese translation Wing Yuen Yat Yeung Hak), is a middle school student reputed to be the unluckiest in all Japan. One day he is killed by a falling alien spacecraft, and on the way his soul meets the first-generation Lucky Man from the lucky star, from whom he gains the ability to transform into the luckiest superhero in the universe by swallowing a "transformation rakkyo." Lucky Man's costume parodies Ultraman, with the characters "Great Fortune" printed on his chest and a tea stalk symbolizing good luck stuck to his forehead; he has no strength or speed, and wins battles entirely through absurd coincidences that occur one after another under the favor of his "lucky star." Once the lucky star is covered by clouds, "Great Fortune" flips to "Great Misfortune," and disasters follow immediately. As the serialization progressed, the work expanded from one-shot parody gags to long story arcs involving alien invaders, the Hero Star and Hero Association, the assembly of sixteen superheroes, and eventually the Inner Universe arc and the Multiverse Tournament arc, and it is known for its extensive parody of the tropes of orthodox shonen manga, its meta-narrative, and its dry humor. This volume is the ninth in the series (the Chinese edition has 16 volumes in total); the specific chapters included cannot be verified at present, so only the series background is introduced here, and readers are advised not to infer the contents of this single volume from this entry.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
