Summary

Lucky Man (Japanese original title Tottemo! Lucky Man) is a shonen manga by Gamo Hiroshi (later famous under the name Tsugumi Ohba), serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from August 1993 to July 1997, with 188 chapters collected in 16 tankobon volumes. The protagonist, Yoichi Ote (rendered in the Hong Kong translation as Eimaru Ichiyokuro), is the unluckiest middle schooler in all of Japan. In the opening he is killed when an alien spaceship crashes onto him, and his soul is saved by Lucky Man, the luckiest hero in the universe. From then on he gains the ability to transform into Lucky Man after swallowing a "transformation rakkyo." In this transformed state he has neither strength nor speed; his only weapon is luck so absurd that, although his attacks are clumsy, various coincidences always leave his enemies flattened. The word "Great Fortune" is written on his chest, and if a cloud covers his lucky star, the characters turn to "Great Misfortune" and he immediately suffers near-fatal bad luck. As the serialization progressed, the story grew from one-shot gag pieces into longer arcs: the Hero Association, Hero Star, the Salvation Superman Invasion arc, the Inner Universe arc, and the cosmic elimination tournament known as the Multiverse Tournament arc, with characters such as Hard-Working Man, Victory Man, Friendship Man, Genius Man, Superstar Man, and the "most vicious ever" Strongest Baron appearing one after another. This volume is the 16th, the final volume of the series, collecting the closing portion of the late-series Multiverse Tournament arc, in which Lucky Man, with luck and a sense of justice, meets the conclusion of the whole work; please refer to the physical copy for the exact chapter count and panel details.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
