The Old House

Summary
Mai Jia is known to readers for his spy novels Decoded, In the Dark, and The Message, but "The Old House" is an important work from his turn toward hometown themes, and was ranked first on the 2023 novella list by the Chinese Contemporary Literature Research Association. The story's greatest craft lies in using a rural rumor of "haunting" as a narrative hook without rushing to supply an answer: the fish skeleton and the catfish are the scientific explanation, the great-aunt transformed into a fish seeking vengeance is the mother's explanation, and each logic is self-consistent, neither able to convince the other. Mai Jia does not adjudicate for the reader, but lets "I" stand speechless before his mother's cold laugh—that helplessness is precisely the chasm between generations, between science and rural experience, that is so hard to cross. The language throughout is sinewy and the details dense: the dimensions of the grain chest, the thump-thump of the grandmother's small quick steps, the seven or eight meters of tracks crawled through the snow, all rendered solid and palpable. The old house is the foundation of the family and the vessel of memory; to children, a mother is likewise an old house—the birthplace of the body and the home of the spirit. Reading this story, one encounters not merely an old family affair but the old house behind each of us that we can neither return to nor let go of.
Editor's review

FAQ
