The Fifth Unit

The Fifth Unit is a military novel by Fenwu Yaoji (real name Dong Qun), first serialized on Qidian.com. The complete work runs to roughly 1.08 million Chinese characters, and print editions have been published by China Friendship Publishing Company since 2008. Set against the backdrop of the fictional Fifth Special Unit, the novel follows Lei Zhen, a spoiled child from a remote mountain village whose family is destroyed by the Japanese invasion, driving him to enlist and serve his country. Amid the tide of the War of Resistance, Lei Zhen meets outstanding Chinese soldiers of the era such as Ma Lan and Xie Jinyuan, and becomes a flag-protecting hero in the defense of the Sihang Warehouse. His military career then extends across the War of Resistance, the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, and the Sino-Indian border war, and he becomes a founding figure of the unit. Drawing on the author's military family background and knowledge of military affairs, the work incorporates details of sniping, jungle warfare, and special-forces training, portraying in a virile, passionate style the fate of soldiers and their devotion to country and family amid war. The book is structured in multiple volumes spanning a long period and grand scenes, combining battlefield description with an evocation of soldiers' faith and spirit of sacrifice. As the prequel to Bullet Marks, it is also an important part of the author's military-fiction universe.
