Summary

This is Volume 1 of the 12-volume series XIII (published in Chinese as Black Sun and Black Sun XIII), corresponding to the opening story arc "The Day of the Black Sun." A man wakes in a cabin by a beach on the U.S. East Coast with a severe head injury and no memory, carrying only a bank safe-deposit key and bearing the Roman numeral "XIII" tattooed on his collarbone. Before he can figure out who he is, armed pursuers are already at his door; in flight and counterattack he discovers he has agent-like skills and combat instincts. To find out his identity, he must temporarily go by "XIII" and follow the two leads of the key and the tattoo, only to be drawn step by step into a political conspiracy involving a presidential assassination. The series was created by Belgian writer Jean Van Hamme and artist William Vance, first published in 1984, set in a fictional America, with realistic, finely detailed art and tight pacing.
