Summary

The Silence of the Lambs is a psychological thriller crime novel by the American writer Thomas Harris, published in 1988 and the best-known installment of the Hannibal Lecter series. The protagonist is FBI trainee Clarice Starling: on the orders of her superior Jack Crawford, she visits a heavily guarded prison for the criminally insane to seek advice from Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and also a cannibalistic serial killer. Meanwhile, the FBI is hunting a serial killer nicknamed "Buffalo Bill," who abducts relatively heavy-set women, imprisons and tortures them, and strips off their skin; the victims include a senator's daughter, and the case is under enormous pressure from the highest levels. Starling must trade her own childhood trauma for fragmentary, oblique clues from Lecter, who, like a calm psychiatrist, peels open her memories and fears bit by bit. Their conversations are at once a contest and a mutual, probing interrogation. The novel interweaves the case investigation and the psychological duel along two narrative threads, presenting criminal psychology and the abyss of human nature through calm, restrained storytelling, and is widely regarded as an important work of the psychological thriller genre. The 1991 film adaptation won multiple Academy Awards and made the story widely known.

Editor's review

FAQ
