Summary
This volume collects issue #5 of the 2011 Venom series, written by Rick Remender, with the single-issue title "Father's Day." At this point the symbiote Venom is under the control of the U.S. government, and its host is Flash Thompson, a veteran who lost both legs in combat and a former high-school classmate of Peter Parker, operating as "Agent Venom" on classified national missions. The issue opens with his pursuit of the deranged villain Human Fly, who has kidnapped a senator's daughter; once the mission wraps up, the story shifts from the battlefield to the family: Flash learns that his alcoholic father has started drinking again and has gone missing, and as he searches for him and gets him into a hospital, he looks back on a string of experiences—being hurt by his father as a boy, acting tough at school, and joining the army in search of approval. The issue pushes action into the background to focus on this new Venom's self-understanding and the cost of a double life, with his relationship with Betty Brant also given a place. In terms of art, the first six pages are drawn by Tony Moore, and the rest by Tom Fowler.
