Starfire Vol. 2

This volume is issue #2 of the DC 2015 series Starfire, also known in Chinese fan-translation archives as Starfire 002. The story follows issue #1: Koriand'r, princess of Tamaran, has left the superhero team and settled alone in Key West, Florida. After meeting local sheriff Stella Gomez, a hurricane named Betty suddenly changes course and heads straight for the island. The issue revolves around the hurricane: Starfire rushes into danger again and again in the raging wind, rescuing tenants from a trailer park camp, neighbors, and a lost parrot, and witnesses ordinary people helping one another. Stella's brother Sol is a Coast Guard member who takes a boat out alone to rescue a honeymoon couple stranded at sea and goes missing. Asked by Stella, Starfire flies across the huge waves to save him and the trapped couple, but exhausts herself and cannot return immediately; the two are stranded on a small island and forced to talk to each other in the storm, and Sol begins to develop feelings for the alien princess. Interspersed are Starfire's misunderstandings of human idioms and her goodwill, and a monster that emerges from a collapsed sinkhole in the storm, claiming to seek a certain female alien and to take her skull to fulfill its master's command, planting seeds for later conflict. The issue retains the light style of the team of writers Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti with art by Emanuela Lupacchino: humor and warmth within a disaster story, with the focus on how Starfire is accepted by her new home.
