Summary

Written for middle school students, The Craft of Writing is a composition course by Xia Mianzun and Liu Xunyu. In separate chapters, these two educators explain the basic concepts, key points, and specific techniques of narrative, expository, argumentative, and familiar essay writing, covering the content of today's primary and secondary school composition courses. Drawing on Chinese and foreign classics such as Dream of the Red Chamber, Water Margin, Resurrection, and Cuore as source material, it improves reading and writing skills at once. The book originated as Xia Mianzun's lecture notes for composition classes at Changsha First Normal School and Chunhui Middle School at Baimahu, later revised and refined by Liu Xunyu through teaching practice, and first published by Kaiming Bookstore in 1926. Nearly a century later, this composition course by two pioneers of education still offers considerable guidance to today's students. This edition is based on the revised November 1930 edition from Shanghai's Kaiming Bookstore, checked against the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary, with explanatory notes added by the editors to aid understanding.

Editor's review

The value of this book lies not in quick results but in foundations. Xia Mianzun and Liu Xunyu divide composition into four genres—narrative, expository, argumentative, and familiar essay—first explaining their forms and boundaries, then discussing material selection, structure, and wording, and finally analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of specific pieces. What is valuable is that these two educators do not offer empty advice to read and write more; instead, they use works such as Dream of the Red Chamber, Water Margin, Resurrection, and Cuore as case studies and models, letting readers see clearly why good writing is good and where their own problems lie. As lecture notes nearly a century old, its language is clean and restrained, free of the formulaic feel of today's composition guides, and all the better suited to slow reading, comparison, and revision. Its insistence that writing is improved through revision is especially salutary for today's middle school students trapped by templates and formulas. It need not be read straight through as a textbook; keep it on your desk as a reference, turn to the relevant chapter before writing in a given genre, and check back after finishing.

Reading tips

  1. Read the general introduction to genres first, then choose chapters on your weakest genre for close reading; there is no need to plow straight through.
  2. After each section, take an old essay of your own and revise it accordingly, turning the book's principles into concrete changes.
  3. When reading the examples from classics, first think about how you would write it, then read the author's analysis and compare the gap.
  4. Copy the book's key points into a self-check list and go through it item by item after each essay.

FAQ

Is this book suitable for primary school students?
Not really. The examples draw on works such as Dream of the Red Chamber and Resurrection, and the discussion of genre boundaries and revision methods is fairly systematic, better suited to upper middle school students and above with some writing experience. Parents or teachers can select the narrative sections and explain them to younger children, but it is not advisable to read it straight through.
Does it teach techniques or principles?
Both, but the emphasis is on principles. The book first defines the concept and scope of each genre, then discusses points to note in material selection, structure, and expression; techniques come after the principles. It therefore offers no templates to apply, but helps readers judge which direction an essay should take.
Are the examples too outdated?
Most examples are classic works, Chinese and foreign, which do not depend on timeliness, and the analytical method focuses on genre and expressive logic, so it still holds up today. If you want contemporary exam model essays or the latest question types, you will need to supplement with other materials.
How should self-learners use this book?
Read it genre by genre, and after each genre write an essay of that kind, then check and revise it item by item against the points mentioned in the book. The book stresses that writing is improved through revision; reading without writing yields limited results.
