Summary
I Am the King is an alternate-history struggle-for-power novel by the web novelist Gunner No. 1, serialized on Qidian from 2014 to 2016, complete at roughly 4.78 million characters and 1,531 chapters. The story is set in a chaotic age resembling the Warring States period: seven powers stand side by side, border flames never cease, and the states face one another both with blades and with the scheming and intrigue of alliance and counter-alliance. The protagonist, Gao Yuan, is a modern combat champion who, after the final fight of his career, is betrayed by the boss behind the scenes because he is thinking of retiring; he dies a wrongful death, yet unexpectedly is reborn as a low-ranking soldier in Fufeng City on the Yan frontier. Starting as a petty county squad leader, he rises by boldness and martial skill, gradually making his name on the battlefield: wiping out the Donghu tribes, clashing with Zhao time and again, and turning the tide when Qi invades Yan, advancing step by step from military clerk and county commandant to General of the Eastern Expedition and commander of the Eastern Expedition Army. In the actual writing the author does not let the protagonist win through modern technology as a crushing advantage; instead he focuses on military reform, training and appointing men, battlefield slaughter, and court maneuvering, so that every promotion Gao Yuan wins comes with bloody cost and political risk. As his power expands, Gao Yuan eventually carves out his own domain, founds Han and takes the title of king, and sets out on the road to unify the six directions and rule all under heaven. The book also unfolds the emotional threads between the protagonist and women such as Ye Jing'er, Helan Yan and Ning Xin, as well as the political contests among his circle of strategists. Running through the whole book is the core belief of "defending what I have and what I cherish with iron and blood and sharp blades"; it is a long historical power-fantasy whose main attractions are cold-weapon warfare and the reconstruction of power.
Editor's review
