Tiangang

Tian Gang is a traditional wuxia novel by the web author Gunner No. 1. Complete at roughly 860,000 Chinese characters, it takes its title from the term for the stars of the Big Dipper's handle, and builds its narrative around a spirit of defiance: "My fate is mine, not heaven's." It chronicles the loves, hatreds, life-and-death struggles, and entanglements of fate among men and women of the jianghu. In his synopsis the author opens with the line "Ask the world, what is love, that it makes lovers pledge their lives to each other," laying down an emotional foundation of lingering tenderness, love and hate, and joy and sorrow within the heart. He then poses the question "Birth is chance, death is destiny—why must heaven always dictate?" and has the protagonist draw his sword with a long cry, cursing "the damned heavens" and vowing never to yield to fate. The line "Wield a long sword, ride a rainbow, strike at will—then look across heaven and earth: who is the true hero?" sets the book's tone of flashing sword qi and joyous vengeance. The story follows a young jianghu man's coming-of-age as he moves between the martial world and the imperial court. Starting from humble circumstances, he fights his way upward step by step through martial skill and strength of character, shifting from reacting passively amid sect feuds and power struggles to seizing the initiative. The novel combines a leveling-up progression line with emotional threads of brotherhood and romance, and ultimately settles into a struggle for dominance, closing on a meditation on fate and individual will. Fast-paced and packed with fight scenes, it is a relatively typical early Qidian traditional wuxia work that balances crowd-pleasing excitement with genuine feeling.
