Summary

Powerful Ming is an alternate-history novel set in the late Ming dynasty by the web novelist Western Spider. It began serialization on Qidian in 2012 and completed its final chapter, "The Grand Ending of Powerful Ming: Imperial Glory," on April 30, 2013. The book runs about 2,025,800 characters in 590 chapters, divided into three parts: "Part One: Storm over Penghu," "Part Two: King of the Seas," and "Part Three: Blood Washes the Realm." The protagonist, Ding Yunyi, comes from an official family of the Ming dynasty and is the son of a high local official, yet rises at a time when the dynasty is tottering, appearing on stage with a double identity—both official and pirate. Openly he is a Penghu inspector of very low rank, bold enough to fly the banner "Ming Inspector Ding"; secretly he is a "pirate king" ruling the seas, with the catchphrase "If pirates can rob, why can't I?" The novel starts from the conflicts in the waters around Penghu, unfolding around battles fought alongside Zheng Zhilong against the Dutch, the running of maritime trade and pirate alliances, and the naval battle at Liaoluo Bay, gradually spreading out the protagonist's legendary rise from a minor inspector to the pinnacle of maritime power. Along the way he crosses paths with historical figures such as Zheng Zhilong, Li Zicheng, and Zhang Xianzhong, and the plot involves campaigns against Japan and resistance to the Later Jin, forming a grand arc "from gaining a foothold in Penghu to the rise of an empire." The work interweaves naval strategy, colonial expansion, firearms innovation, and court intrigue, shaping a protagonist who is both righteous and ruthless, brutal in action yet full of cunning. It is a representative late-Ming maritime novel in Qidian's "History: Song, Yuan, and Ming" category.

Editor's review

FAQ
