Summary

Bayonet 1937 is the first volume of web novelist Western Spider's "Bayonet Trilogy" and a companion piece to his earlier "Iron Blood Trilogy." It is a time-travel historical military novel centered on the regular front of the War of Resistance, running to roughly 2.15 million Chinese characters in 714 chapters. The story opens in the Northeast on the eve of the September 18th Incident: a modern soldier is transported back to those turbulent years and must make his way within the Northeast Army system, living through the aftermath of the Huanggutun Incident, the Northeast Flag Replacement, the Tiger Hall affair, and the Nakamura Shintaro incident and other Sino-Japanese clashes. Step by step he comes to see the aggressor's ambitions and to understand what military power and real strength mean for saving the nation. Drawing on ties with Zhang Xueliang and others, he builds his own force, sustaining war with war in the cracks between factions, and after repeated setbacks forms the 111th Division of the National Revolutionary Army. With the July 7th Incident and the Battle of Shanghai, this unit marches to the regular front and holds its ground in the bloody fighting at Shanghai and Nanjing, writing with bayonets and flesh the tragic, heroic battle of Chinese soldiers who "win when they fight, take when they attack." The work interweaves espionage and battlefield threads: the first half stresses underground work, secret lines, and power games in the Northeast, while the second half shifts to large-scale regular combat, with dense battle descriptions and high emotion. It is regarded as one of the more representative long works of time-travel fiction about the War of Resistance. This is the first volume of the series; it is followed by The Great Dictator Report and National Soul.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips
