Master of the Great Calamity is a xianxia novel by the web author Heishan Laogui, serialized on Qidian from December 2017 to its completion in May 2019, running 1,017 chapters and roughly 3.2 million characters. The story opens in a cultivation world facing a "great calamity" once every three thousand years: from the Demon Abyss of the Western Wastes, dark beings descend at each cycle, and cultivators, knowing they will surely die, still press forward to block the abyss and leave their names, written in blood, on the Black Stone Stele. The protagonist, Fang Yuan, comes from a poor family and studies the Daoyuan True Explanation for ten years; in the immortal examination he takes first place on the roster through his understanding of this book, only for his result to be voided when the Immortal Alliance cancels that subject, making him a laughingstock. He eventually enters the Qingyang Sect as a menial, and in fragmented texts in the library discovers the "Heavenly Derivation Art"—a method of deduction that can project and improve cultivation techniques and paths—and from there gradually completes his dao foundation. Framed by fellow disciples, he crosses the trial bridge and becomes a formal disciple, slays demons and tops the merit roster despite his low cultivation, enters the Moxi Lake trial, completes his heavenly dao foundation, condenses a purple core, and advances to Nascent Soul and Spirit Transformation, until he uncovers the truth of "moxi" and the "great calamity" and leads the world's cultivators to end the cyclical catastrophe. The book centers on a poor youth's rise through genuine ability, emphasizing scheming and deduction and calm calculation rather than systems or rebirth; the protagonist is upright and decisive, and most supporting characters and villains have their own logic of choice. In its middle and later stages the scope expands from sect strife to the survival of civilization, making it one of Heishan Laogui's representative xianxia works.
