Daredevil #27

This volume is issue #27 of the 2015 Daredevil series (Daredevil Vol. 5 #27, published October 11, 2017; issue #593 in the legacy cumulative numbering), written by Charles Soule and drawn by Ron Garney. It is the second of three parts in the "Land of the Blind" arc. Previously, Matt Murdock received a plea for help from China from his long-missing old partner Blindspot (Sam Chung) and set aside his legal work to travel there. Outside a temple he was drawn into a melee with Hand ninjas, and ultimately discovered that the person behind it all was his own shadow and protégé, Blindspot. In this issue, Matt, imprisoned at a remote stronghold, must use wits and skill to escape, while his unexpected opponent shares a deep history with him: blinded Sam, at the arrangement of his mother Lu Wei, traded his soul to the Hand's "Beast" for his sight—and with it gained new powers and a new allegiance. The story pulls back and forth between mother and son, mentor and student, and redemption, setting up the conclusion in the next issue. At the same time, this issue continues the earlier thread of "testifying anonymously before the Supreme Court on behalf of superheroes," making it one of the representative passages of Soule's run in which courtroom drama and street-level martial arts are set side by side.
