Avengers Vol. 7 #3.1

Avengers #3.1 is a tie-in issue outside the main Avengers storyline of Marvel's 2016 relaunch, written by Mark Waid and drawn by Barry Kitson, published in January 2017 and running about 25 pages. The story turns back the clock to the Silver Age: Captain America has just recruited Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch into the team, forming the lineup later dubbed by readers "Captain America's band of misfits," but the citizens of New York are having none of it, denouncing them as "counterfeit heroes" and "criminals and mutant terrorists," and the Avengers' reputation plummets. While striving to win back public trust, Captain America leads the team against an attack by the Thinker and his miniature "Uncanny Androids." In the fighting the members discover that the team's new member, a woman from northern Thailand named Cressida, has a suspicious gift: she can multiply her teammates' abilities—Quicksilver runs faster, the Scarlet Witch grows stronger, and Hawkeye shoots more swiftly. Spider-Man and Daredevil also make guest appearances in this issue. At the end, Hawkeye gives the mysterious amplifier the codename "Avenger X," and the truth of her identity and of how she parasitizes the life force of others is only gradually revealed in the subsequent issues #2.1 and #3.1 through #4.1. With retro artwork and narrative pacing throughout, the issue retells the crisis of trust brought on by the first lineup change in Avengers history.
