Series
This volume is issue #7 of Mark Waid's Avengers (2016) series, a standalone single-issue story. It opens with the Avengers team (Spider-Man, Captain America Sam Wilson, Vision, Hercules, Thor Jane Foster, and Wasp Nadia Pym) in a hard fight in downtown New York against a slime-tentacle monster that keeps reassembling itself; after they bring it down together, it immediately regenerates. At this point Victor von Doom, operating as the "Infamous Iron Man," appears, banishes the monster with a spell, and declares that the Avengers "need his services." Except for Wasp, all the team members are wary of their former nemesis; but Nadia, who grew up in the Red Room and knows him only as a genius scientist and magician to be admired, becomes his only "fan." Doom reveals his real purpose: abnormal magical fluctuations have appeared at a girls' leadership camp named after Sue Storm in upstate New York. He is unwilling to intrude there himself, so he asks the Avengers for combat support and for Nadia to infiltrate and investigate. The girls at the camp have made a pact with the moon goddess Anamelek to get their wishes granted, and even plan to sacrifice Nadia; Doom and the Avengers arrive in time, and Nadia, in the melee, saves the leading girl and passes the test of humanity Doom secretly set for her. This volume, with a light and humorous tone, presents a duet of "villain rehabilitation" and a young heroine's growth.

Summary

After the time-spanning "War of the Realms" arc, issue #7 feels like a deliberate breather: the scale shrinks to a summer camp outside New York, yet it packs in the most interesting character chemistry of the volume. Mark Waid and Jeremy Whitley bring Doctor Doom, as the "Infamous Iron Man," face to face with this reassembled Avengers team for the first time; the teammates' hostility contrasts sharply with Wasp Nadia's fan-like enthusiasm—she grew up in the Red Room and knows the "double genius of physics and mysticism" only from books, a setup that makes the old character's new situation both funny and touching. Visually, Phil Noto uses clean lines and restrained shadow work for the battles and dialogue, and with the coloring of Mike Del Mundo and Marco D'Alfonso, the magical scenes have a rare clarity; Alex Ross's cover is a collector's highlight. The issue is complete in one installment, yet accomplishes three things: it gives Doom a plausible way into the team, shapes Nadia's independent personality, and sets up Doom's "joining" in the next issue. For readers who just want a taste of modern Avengers, this is a highly cost-effective issue; for longtime readers following the series, it is an unskippable piece for understanding the character relationships in this volume.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
