Summary

Everyone praises Song ci, yet Tang ci carries a deeper feeling. Among Tang ci, Li Bai's "Pusa Man" and "Yi Qin E" are hailed as the ancestors of all later ci and qu; from there, Bai Juyi, Liu Yuxi, and others published ci works, and by the late Tang the "Huajian" style of ci had become a prevailing trend. After reading Tang poetry, one ought to read Tang ci as well.

Editor's review

"Complete Tang Ci" retrieves Tang and Five Dynasties ci from behind the fame of Song ci, presenting the process by which ci evolved from a by-form of poetry into an independent genre. Li Bai's "Pusa Man" and "Yi Qin E" are regarded as the ancestors of all later ci and qu; Bai Juyi and Liu Yuxi brought a poet's brush to ci, and by Wen Tingyun and the Huajian poets the character of ci grew increasingly dense and delicate. This book gathers representative works along this thread, letting readers see how the same subject is handled differently in the two genres of poetry and ci, and appreciate the directness of feeling and clarity of language that characterize Tang ci. It suits readers extending their reading after Tang poetry, and also those interested in the origins of ci. There is no need to read quickly; by comparing it with the "Huajian Collection" and anthologies of Song ci, one can observe changes in syntax, imagery, and emotional expression from Tang to Song, and better understand the diverse faces of ci before it was labeled a genre of sensual delicacy.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Literature lovers who have read Tang poetry and want to learn about the origins of ci
  • University students interested in the evolution of Tang and Song ci
  • Readers who enjoy Li Bai and Bai Juyi and want to broaden their reading
  • Language teachers needing an anthology of Tang and Five Dynasties ci for teaching or self-study

Not a good fit for

  • Academic researchers expecting a systematic theoretical monograph on ci studies
  • Readers interested only in the mature Song ci style and impatient with early ci
  • Beginners needing detailed annotations and vernacular translations for every piece

Reading tips

  1. Begin with Li Bai's two pieces, then proceed in chronological order by author to sense ci's trajectory from a by-form of poetry to independence.
  2. For each piece, compare it with poetry by the same author to see how the same feeling is expressed differently in poetry and ci.
  3. Read alongside selections from the "Huajian Collection," noting changes in imagery and language in late Tang ci.
  4. Keep brief notes on cipai, subject matter, and emotional tone to review the overall thread.

FAQ

Can I read this book without any background in ci studies?
Yes. The book focuses on the works themselves; Tang ci are short and relatively plain in language, so the barrier to entry is low. If you are entirely unfamiliar with cipai and prosody, however, it is best to start with a few representative works and consult reference books when something is unclear, rather than forcing yourself to read it all at once.
What are the main differences between Tang ci and Song ci?
Tang ci belongs to the formative period of the genre; its subjects and language are closer to poetry, and its emotional expression is direct, while Huajian ci turns toward a delicate, ornate style. Song ci is more mature and varied in prosody, structure, and subject matter. Reading them in comparison makes it clearer how ci gradually became independent of poetry.
Is this book suitable for use as a textbook?
It can serve as a supplementary anthology of Tang and Five Dynasties ci. It covers the thread from Li Bai to the Huajian poets and is suitable for use alongside a literary history course. If you need annotations for every piece, prosodic explanations, or exercises, however, you will also need a dedicated ci anthology or textbook.

About the author

Li Bai Author · China

Li Bai, the leading figure of Tang-dynasty Romantic poetry, styled Taibai and known as the Green Lotus Lay Buddhist, was later honored as the "Poet Immortal." His ancestral home was Chengji in Longxi, and he lived in Shu as a youth before leaving at twenty-five to travel widely. In the early Tianbao era he was summoned to the capital as a Hanlin Attendant and later sent away with a gift of gold. During the An Lushan Rebellion he was implicated for joining the staff of Prince Li Lin of Yong, sentenced to exile in Yelang, and pardoned en route; in his later years he drifted through the southeast and died in Dangtu in the first year of Baoying. This library holds thirty-nine of his works, including the "Hard Is the Road" series and the two-volume complete works. His poetry is bold, free, and extraordinarily imaginative, often voicing the hardships of travel and reflections on life. He is paired with Du Fu as "Li and Du," and his collection has come down to us as the Li Taibai Collection.

Bai Juyi Author · Chinese

Bai Juyi (772–846), courtesy name Letian and styled Xiangshan Jushi, was born in Xinzheng, Henan, with ancestral roots in Taiyuan. A leading Tang dynasty realist poet, he championed the New Yuefu movement together with Yuan Zhen, and the two were known as "Yuan-Bai"; he is also paired with Liu Yuxi as "Liu-Bai." Bai Juyi served as a Hanlin academician and Left Remonstrator, among other posts. His wide-ranging work includes satirical poems on the hardships of ordinary people and long narrative and lyrical songs. Masterpieces such as "Song of Everlasting Sorrow," "Song of the Pipa," and "The Charcoal Seller" are noted for their plain, natural language and sincere feeling, and have exerted a lasting influence on later poetry. His Bai Shi Changqing Collection survives, and this library holds 77 of his works, including poems, prose collections, and verse groups such as Poems from Qin and Spring by the Xunyang River, commonly classed under ancient poetry, classic works, and inspirational growth.

温庭筠 Author

Wen Tingyun was a poet and ci lyricist of the Tang dynasty. Public sources offer limited information about his life, and details such as his birth and death dates and native place cannot be reliably established. The library holds 17 related works, including Wen Tingyun Ci Collection, Wen Tingyun Ci Collection and Wei Zhuang Ci Collection, and Among the Flowers, as well as appearances in anthologies such as the Ci Series and Essential Records of Ci Masters Through the Ages; they are generally classified under classical poetry, literary appreciation, and classic works. Wen Tingyun's ci are known for their gentle, ornate style; he excelled at layering imagery and depicting moods in polished, restrained language, and he had a profound influence on the development of the Among the Flowers style. His poetry also has merit, touching on travel, farewell, and personal reflection. Overall, he is regarded as an important figure in the development of the ci genre in the late Tang, and his works are frequently mentioned in later anthologies and ci scholarship.
