The Way of the Knight-Errant

The Way of the Knight-Errant is a long classical xianxia novel by Zaohuazhaizhu, serialized on Qidian Chinese Network since 2015 and now completed, totaling about 1.35 million Chinese characters. The opening passage states the work's central theme: "To cultivate the immortal way, one must first cultivate the human way. Who says cultivating immortality means killing for treasure and seeking only profit? Those are demon thieves and demon bandits, not immortal heroes. If a person abandons the conscience of being human, what way is there to cultivate? What immortal is there to become?" It then proposes: "A knight-errant uses force to defy prohibitions; an immortal knight-errant uses force to defy the heavenly way. If the heavenly way shows favoritism and good and evil go unrewarded, then I must change it," replacing the traditional xianxia pursuit of longevity and resource competition with upholding the human way and practicing chivalry. The story begins with the Xuanzong disciple Xi Wuya traveling a thousand li to find a disciple and arriving at the Bai mansion in Wuyang to take a disciple. Through episodes such as the Dao discussion of the Xuan sect, Purple Cloud Manor, the imbalance of the five elements, the Hundred Herbs Spirit Garden, and the chessboard of the heart, it gradually unfolds a cultivation world built on the framework of the six great martial sacred lands, including Xuanzong. The protagonist is honest and kind, full of righteous spirit, yet neither pedantic nor a hot-blooded fool: facing human calculations, he is good at laying plans and decisive in temperament, often turning situations around through "schemes within schemes" and "turning the enemy's plan against them"; he is also accompanied by a group of vividly drawn companions who provide frequent humor. The book follows a light, elegant path, emphasizing the atmosphere of xianxia and intellectual maneuvering, striving to write a cultivation path with chivalric spirit between the "human way" and the "immortal way."
