Sword-Wielding Formula is a traditional wuxia novel by web author Er Tijiao, serialized on Qidian starting August 6, 2007, and completed on December 31, 2008, totaling about 1.8329 million characters in 698 chapters, with a sequel titled Finger-Snap Song. The novel constructs a "pure jianghu": government and historical background are deliberately downplayed, order in the jianghu is maintained by the major sects, clans, and independent wanderers themselves, and disruption also comes from within the jianghu. The author summarizes the book's themes as "interest" and "order"—marriages, alliances, and confrontations among prestigious families are essentially redistributions of interest; who can rewrite the rules depends on strength and the power to speak. The story begins with the Qingcheng Sect. The protagonist Xingyun is an ordinary disciple of low martial skill and status in the Qingcheng Sect, plain in appearance and not especially clever, yet skilled at objectively analyzing others' suggestions and often able to offer insightful ideas. He had once accepted his lot, but later begins to change for the sake of the woman he loves: from knowing nothing of right and wrong in the world to gradually seeing this jianghu clearly, adapting to it, and ultimately breaking his fixed notions of traditional prestigious authority amid vast clan feuds and resolving a martial arts crisis. The work features a clearly tiered martial power system, from low to high divided into Sword Style, Sword Qi, Sword Gang, Sword Soul, and Heaven-Piercing levels, and includes a "Divine Sword Ranking" ranking the top experts of the jianghu. The poems in the book are all original to the author, and chapter titles are mostly lines of verse, making it one of the more representative traditional wuxia-to-web-novel works of the late 2000s.

Summary

The Swordplay Chronicles is a traditional wuxia epic by web novelist Er Tijiao, serialized on Qidian from August 6, 2007, to December 31, 2008. It spans roughly 1.83 million Chinese characters across 698 chapters, with a sequel titled Finger-Snap Song.

The novel constructs a "pure jianghu": officialdom and historical context are deliberately downplayed, and order within the martial world is maintained by the major sects, prominent clans, and unaffiliated wanderers themselves, with disruption also arising from within. The author sums up the book's themes as "interest" and "order"—marriages, alliances, and rivalries among prestigious houses are at bottom redistributions of interest, and who can rewrite the rules depends on power and the right to speak.

The story begins with the Qingcheng Sect. The protagonist, Xingyun, is an ordinary disciple of low standing and modest martial skill—unremarkable in appearance and not especially clever, yet adept at objectively weighing others' advice and often capable of offering perceptive ideas. He had long accepted his lot, but begins to change for the sake of the woman he loves: from knowing nothing of good and evil in the world, he gradually comes to see the jianghu clearly and adapt to it, and ultimately, amid the vast feuds of the great houses, shatters his fixed notions of traditional authority and resolves a crisis in the martial world.

The work features a clearly tiered martial-arts system, ranked from low to high as sword forms, sword qi, sword gang, sword soul, and heaven-piercing, along with a "Divine Sword Ranking" that rates the top masters of the jianghu. All the poems in the book are original to the author, and most chapter titles take lines of verse—making it a fairly representative work of the late 2000s transition from traditional wuxia to web fiction.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips
