Tonight Not

Tonight Not is a short story collection by Hong Kong writer Yi Shu, published in 1985 by Cosmos Books. It contains twelve standalone stories, including "Tonight Not," "Unsatisfied," "City Love," "Winter," "Business Trip," "Long Ago," "Married Life," "Mother and Lover," "When Young," "Correspondence Friend," "Missed Train," and "A Handbag." The book observes urban men and women, often entering through first-person narration or an observer's gaze, writing of waiting in bars, reunions with old friends, weariness in marriage, and the misalignment between mothers and daughters, and between lovers. The stories are short yet turn sharply. Yi Shu's prose is cool and restrained, her dialogue crisp, and she excels at sketching characters' circumstances and psychology with a few seemingly casual strokes, laying bare both the decency and the chill of urban life. Recurring throughout is how women conduct themselves in emotional relationships: they neither denounce nor wallow, but after being let down they keep their clarity and dignity. The work has a distinct period flavor—its cities, clothing, professions, and social manners bear the imprint of Hong Kong in the 1970s and 1980s—yet its insight into loneliness and independence still reads as relevant today, and it can be seen as a concentrated presentation of Yi Shu's early short-story style.
