Summary

Otho the Archer (original French title Othon l'archer, published in 1840) is a short historical novel by Alexandre Dumas based on a folk legend from the Rhine. Ludwig, lord of Godesburg, marries Emma but, because of deliberate instigation by his cousin Godfrey, suspects that his only son Otho is not his own child but the fruit of an affair between Emma and her old friend Albert. Once suspicion takes root it is hard to uproot: the lord sends his wife to a convent and intends to confine Otho in a monastery. The boy would rather die than submit and throws himself into the Rhine. Fate does not end the story there: Otho miraculously survives and joins a company of archers traveling to Cleves for an archery tournament. Through courage and marksmanship he wins the prize awarded by Princess Helena and also wins her heart. Yet his noble birth cannot be spoken of, and the romance seems doomed; meanwhile, the rejected Count of Ravenstein challenges the aged Prince of Cleves, the situation turns critical, and Otho and his companions suddenly disappear. The story closes amid true and false kinship, class prejudice, and chivalric spirit, with its theme resting on the idea that true nobility lies not in blood but in nobility of the soul. The book is short and has the flavor of a fairy tale or legend; it is a light read for understanding Dumas's early romantic fiction.

Editor's review
