Summary

On November 22, 1963, gunshots rang out in Dallas, Texas, and President Kennedy was assassinated—an event that would irrevocably alter the course of America and the world. The novel's protagonist, Jake Epping, is a divorced high-school English teacher who stumbles upon a door that leads into the past. However many times he passes through it, he always arrives at the same fixed point in time: September 9, 1958. Realizing he may be able to change history, Jake develops something close to an obsession with preventing Kennedy's assassination: in his view, if Kennedy had not been killed, a whole chain of tragedies—the Vietnam War, the murder of Martin Luther King Jr., and more—might never have happened. So he returns to the past again and again, living, teaching, and waiting in small-town America from the late 1950s into the early 1960s, caught between love and moral duty. Stephen King reconstructs that era of American life through dense, accumulated everyday detail, while making time itself a force that pushes back: every intervention sets off chain reactions that are impossible to predict. Beyond its suspense, the novel asks whether we would truly be better off if history could be redone, and it stands as one of the weightiest long works of King's career.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
