Mu Xin

Mu Xin, born Sun Pu in 1927 in Wuzhen, Zhejiang, and died there in 2011, was a Chinese painter, writer and poet. He studied at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and the Hangzhou National College of Art, under Lin Fengmian. After moving to New York in 1982, he devoted himself to painting and writing, and his works were published in Taiwan and mainland China. His writing spans essays, poetry and lecture notes, marked by a spare, refined style that combines classical sensibility with modern awareness, as well as a painter's visual acuity and a poet's care for language. His major works include Literature Memoirs: 1989–1994, A Skylark Calls All Day, Reflections in Columbia, Mu Xin on Mu Xin: A Supplement to Literature Memoirs and Selected Poems of Mu Xin; twenty-three of his titles are held in this collection. His writing has had a lasting influence on readers across the Taiwan Strait and is regarded as a distinctive case in twentieth-century Chinese-language writing.
