Records of the Yellow Springs

Records of the Yellow Springs is an Eastern fantasy web novel by Wo Jiao Xibanqiu, about 970,000 Chinese characters long and completed. The story begins with a demon uprising in Chang'an in the thirteenth year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang: the Tang ruler establishes the Xuanling Court, overseen by the four great families of An, Ji, Pang, and Sima, to deal specifically with disturbances caused by demons and ghosts. At the end of the Tang, the Xuanling Court disbands, and the four families scatter. In the modern day, An Zenao, a descendant of the An family, meets a spoiled rich girl and is maneuvered into assisting the police with supernatural cases, from which point he is drawn into all manner of bizarre incidents—the strange cases in the city never end, and he must also go down to the underworld on "official business," while his boss is none other than a thoroughgoing rich young lady. The six paths of the demon sect return, old grudges among the four families resurface, and the apocalyptic prophecies recorded in the Records of the Yellow Springs come true one by one. With the help of seven ancient demons—the Pupil Ghost, the Nine Phoenix, the Thunder Tapir, the Zheng, the Crimson, the Savage, and the Giant Tooth—An Zenao investigates strange cases while confronting the demon sect, trying to turn the tide and pacify demons and ghosts. The work uses a dual narrative structure interweaving past and present: the Xuanling Court and the thousand-year inheritance of the four families in the Tang form the hidden line, while modern urban supernatural cases form the visible line, blending urban suspense with Eastern fantasy to build a worldview in which gods, demons, humans, and spirits share the same space, combining a family epic with a personal coming-of-age thread.
