Summary

The Twilight Watch is the third volume of the Night Watch series by the Russian writer Sergei Lukyanenko, originally published in Russian in 2004 and translated into Chinese by Wu Jianping. The story is still set in Moscow and continues the series' premise: living alongside ordinary people are "Others," who can enter the Twilight, a shadowy dimension parallel to reality, and draw supernatural powers from it; the Others are divided into the Light and the Dark, overseen respectively by the Night Watch and the Day Watch, with the Inquisition above both maintaining the balance. This volume consists of three novellas that are both independent and interconnected—"Time Without an Owner," "Space Without an Owner," and "Power Without an Owner"—and unfolds once more from the first-person perspective of the Night Watch magician Anton Gorodetsky. An anonymous letter raises an astonishing question: does the ancient spell Fuaran, said to be able to transform ordinary humans into Others, really exist, and has it already been used? The Night Watch, the Day Watch, and the Inquisition each send people to investigate, and Anton can rely only on human-detective-style reasoning and his ability to slip into the Twilight to grope for the truth in the crevice where Light and Dark both cooperate and oppose each other, again and again facing the choice of whether humans should be made into Others. The work blends detective reasoning, urban fantasy, and philosophical speculation, and is a key volume in the series that links what comes before and after.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ

About the author

Sergei Lukyanenko is an author known primarily for science fiction, though public information about his nationality, dates of birth and death, and full career remains limited. Within our database, his work The Stars Are Cold Toys (2 volumes) is classified as science fiction, and this is the main basis for understanding his creative profile. One work alone is not enough to give a complete picture of the author, but it does suggest that his writing belongs to the science fiction field and tends toward narratives set against the backdrop of the cosmos, the future, or technological imagination. For readers who wish to learn more about this author, the included work is a reasonable starting point, with attention to its thematic settings and narrative style. Given the limited material, this introduction does not speculate further about the author's life experience, education, awards, honors, or total output; it can be supplemented if more public information becomes available.
