Death of Hawkman Vol. 3

This is issue 3 of DC's six-issue miniseries Death of Hawkman, originally published in December 2016, the third part of the "Out of Time" storyline, subtitled "Strange Bedfellows." The plot follows the first two issues: Rann's capital, Ranagar, has been bombed into ruins with millions dead, and war between the Rannians and their old enemy Thanagar (Hawkman's homeworld) is imminent. Earth adventurer Adam Strange, framed as a Thanagarian spy, is trapped in a Rannian prison but rescued by Thanagarian police officer Katar Hol (Hawkman); both know Thanagar did not launch the attack and that the real culprit remains hidden. In issue 3, Adam and Hawkman are both wanted interstellar fugitives, with bounty hunters and pursuers from both worlds closing in. To prevent war, they must dodge the manhunt while secretly investigating who is stoking the conflict and why. Meanwhile, Thanagarian police partner Renn Kral, Rannian survivors and the high council, brainwashed citizens, and the escaped old enemy Despero appear in turn, and Despero's true purpose is partly revealed in this issue—he seeks not mere revenge but a larger scheme involving the Zeta Beam and N-metal. Beyond the action, the issue intersperses Katar Hol's past as a Thanagarian police officer and Adam Strange's family situation, letting this mismatched temporary partnership gradually build trust in desperate straits and setting the stage for the cosmic showdown in the final three issues.
