Summary

The story unfolds on a fictional continent torn by war between gods and demons. Legend holds that the demon race and the god race once dwelled together in this world, and that their struggle for control over humanity ignited the War of Radiance. After the war, immense forces ruptured space itself, creating many isolated worlds; several thousand years later, humans have rebuilt civilization and become masters of the land. Yet the gods and demons have never given up their designs on the mortal realm. Enleke, a boy from a humble grocery family, is an ordinary person in this age of upheaval. His aptitude makes him wholly unsuited to practicing magic, yet by a twist of fate he becomes the apprentice of the lecherous and cunning mage Victor, and with three companions—Bertina, Kate, and Jerry—sets out on the path of a magic trial apprentice. After the four trial apprentices are ordered on a mission to the Kingdom of Kaochi, a prank forces Enleke to disguise himself as a woman; and a duke who was once a notorious playboy falls genuinely in love with this seemingly cute and muddled "beauty." Mired deep in trouble, Enleke fails to notice that behind him a pair of eyes is watching him with predatory intent.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

About the author

Author

Lan Jing is a Chinese author of medical books, though publicly available personal information about the author remains quite limited; birth and death dates, nationality, education, and professional background are not clearly documented. One work by this author is held in the collection, An Illustrated Atlas of Effective Prescriptions from the Lan Family for Skin and Venereal Diseases in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which indicates that the author's writing focuses on the fields of TCM dermatology and venereology and presents the material by combining "effective prescriptions" with illustrations. The book is a medical work intended for clinical reference and prescription lookup, bringing together images and formula information and reflecting a practical, comparison-friendly approach to compilation. Because biographical information is scarce, it is difficult at present to assess the author's academic training or lineage; readers should focus instead on the TCM formulas and the diagnostic and treatment material on skin and venereal diseases contained in the book.
