Chronicles of Magic and Wonder

Chronicles of Magic and Wonder is a long-form fantasy web novel by Xibei Mao. Serialization began on Qidian in 2009 and concluded on April 20, 2010, totaling roughly 1.8197 million Chinese characters across 490 chapters. It is a VIP work signed by Qidian's first editorial group. The story opens with an accident: two young people are cast adrift onto an unfamiliar magical continent. They soon discover that this world contains not only mages, merchant caravans, academies, and necromancers, but also fantastical beings beyond conventional reason. Yet they are not alarmed, for back on Earth they were already espers capable of manipulating gravity and erasing memories. The head-on collision between the esper system and the magic system on the same continent—and the sparks it strikes—forms the novel's core appeal. The plot follows an otherworld adventure: survival in dire straits, contracts and companionship, then bounty killers, necromantic puppets, the upheaval in the City of Glory, rune armaments, and the academy council, advancing all the way to siege warfare, mercenary company conflicts, conspiracies and the mystery of the seal, and finally concluding as the protagonists set out on the road again. The male lead, Yiming, wields "rune armaments" as his core combat system, while the female lead, Meiali Didwell Louise, also possesses her own exclusive armament. Council members, chanters such as Ani, and other characters form an ensemble of supporting roles; daily interactions, sword duels, and battle scenes alternate, moving at a brisk pace with a lively, anime-style narrative. As one of Xibei Mao's early representative works, it belongs alongside The Lost Crown and The Knight of the End to the same otherworld fantasy lineage. During serialization it accumulated tens of thousands of recommendations, making it one of the representative texts of the "espers × magic" strand in Chinese web fantasy around 2010.
