Magic Armament

Wandering Toad is a veteran web novelist with a distinctive style: meticulous worldbuilding, brisk pacing, witty dialogue, and alternating combat and adventure. In Magic Armament this shows in solid sword-and-sorcery construction—the court intrigues of the Gold Moon Dynasty, the relics of the Great Stone Dynasty a thousand years gone, and the rules of magical artifacts and magic contracts all plant hooks from the opening pages, so readers grasp the main thread at once. The protagonist Adi is no born-invincible genius; he has a past running with thieves and the immediate pressure of being hunted, and must earn his way inch by inch through snow and labyrinth. This lowly-start-plus-ruins-and-wonders structure is exactly where old-school fantasy web fiction reads best. The book runs over a million characters and is complete, so it can be read straight through without fear of hiatus. If you enjoy Western fantasy worldbuilding, the thrill of leveling up through monster fights and exploration-cum-puzzle-solving, and don't mind a narrative voice that cracks the occasional joke, it deserves a place on your shelf; if you prize rigorous magic systems and a serious epic tone, adjust your expectations.
