The youth Yeyu wakes in the demon city, beside him his guardian master and the demon grand elder Moluo, before him a ruined city of shattered streets and collapsing houses; he insists on finding "them," those who refuse to be spoken of, while memory and truth are buried layer by layer in silence. The novel's main threads are imperial rivalry and racial war, interwoven with master-disciple bonds, mysteries of origin, and the seal of demon gods, creating a grand, epic Western-style fantasy world.
