Summary

The Warded Man is the first novel in The Demon Cycle by American author Peter V. Brett; its original English title is The Warded Man (published in the UK as The Painted Man). The novel is set in a world where subterranean demons rule the night: whenever the sun sets, sand demons, wood demons, wind demons, fire demons, and the enormous stone demons crawl up from beneath the earth to attack humanity. Humanity's only defense is the wards painted on houses, roads, and bodies—power marks from ancient times that, in the age of the Deliverer, were said to serve both offense and defense; now only their increasingly unreliable protective function remains, and the offensive wards have long been lost. The story revolves around three youths scarred by demon attacks. Arlen, a farm boy, witnesses his mother's grave injury and the destruction of his home, and resolves that fear will no longer be the price of survival; he leaves the wards alone, works as a Messenger, apprentices himself to masters, and travels to the desert warrior tribe of Krasia for training. Rojer is crippled in the attack that kills his parents, yet finds strength as a musician and Jongleur; Leesha, born lowly and long bullied, is taken as an apprentice by the herbalist Bruna and gradually masters herbs, medicine, and ancient ward knowledge. The three threads finally converge at Cutter's Hollow, where they face both demons and humanity's own cowardice. Centered on growth, trauma, and whether fear can be overcome, and combining battle scenes with intricate worldbuilding, the novel is a landmark debut of contemporary epic fantasy.

Editor's review

FAQ

英文原书名在英国出版时作 The Painted Man,在美国等地作 The Warded Man,内容为同一部小说,中文版通常以 The Warded Man 作为原版书名标注。
