Summary
After Ascension is a long Eastern fantasy novel by Huangfu Qi, serialized on Qidian from September 9, 2007, and completed in October 2009. Running about 3.45 million Chinese characters, it is his first full-length work. The protagonist, Fengyun Wuji, was originally the "Sword God" of the mortal martial world: he learned sword forging at three, practiced the sword at five, left home at seven to seek out famous masters, left his sect repeatedly at eight, took birds and beasts as teachers in the wilderness, and created his own movement and sword techniques; at sixteen he lost to the Sword Demon Dugu Baitian, at seventeen he created the "Demon-Destroying Heart Sutra," and later finally defeated Dugu Baitian; at thirty-three he shattered the void and ascended in broad daylight. Yet ascension is not the end of the story but only the beginning. The story is set in a vast universe where demons, blood clans, angels, and humans coexist: after the first war of gods and demons, humanity was defeated and forced to sign the humiliating "Ancient Pact" in the Primordial Era, thereafter recuperating in the cracks. After Fengyun Wuji ascends, what he sees is not an immortal realm but the desolate, ruined land of the Primordial Era, where humanity stands at the very bottom among the many races. From his first entry into the Primordial Era and the establishment of the Sword Domain to his comprehension of the "Trinity of the Primordial Spirit," whose three avatars walk separately among humanity, the demon realm, and his own self, he gradually uncovers one primordial secret after another, ultimately leading humanity with the power to "command angels and rule the earth" and launching the tragic second war of gods and demons. The work is grand in scale and tragic in tone, taking humanity's struggle for survival as its main thread and conveying the weight of predecessors who sacrificed themselves one after another to ensure the race's continuation. It is regarded as one of the representative "human epic" works of early online fantasy.
Editor's review
Who it's for
A good fit for

Not a good fit for
Reading tips
